The Montgomery GI Bill Active-Duty (MGIB-AD) program, sometimes known as Chapter 30, provides education benefits to Veterans and Servicemembers who have served at least two years of active-duty service.

Types of Training

The following assistance is approved under the Post-9/11 GI Bill:

  • apprenticeships or on-the-job training
  • certain entrance examinations
  • college degree and certificate programs
  • co-op training
  • correspondence courses
  • entrepreneurship training
  • high-tech training
  • licensing and certification tests
  • technical or vocational courses

Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Benefits are generally payable for 10 years following an individual's release from honorable active-duty service.

Available Benefits and Eligibility

Eligible service members may receive up to 36 months of education benefits. The monthly benefit paid to an individual is based on the type of training he or she undertakes while in the service, his or her length of your service, his or her category, any college fund eligibility, and if he or she contributed to the $600 buy-up program. Individuals usually have 10 years to use their MGIB-AD benefits, but the time limit may differ depending on the situation.

$600 Buy-Up Program

Some service members may contribute up to an additional $600 to the GI Bill to receive increased monthly benefits. For an additional $600 contribution, the individual may receive up to $5,400 in additional GI Bill benefits. The additional contribution must be made while on active duty.
